A Measured Approach

If you look on the internet, you will find a couple blog posts I’ve done in the very distant past. A post about a bro date I went on 20 years ago. Some posts from when I was married. A lot has happened.

That was then. Foraging my way forward without much of a plan except what was handed to me. Now? Looking to be more measured in my approach, literally.

How so ? These days, I live by data. I try to put a number, a value, or some kind of measurement to everything. Is that necessarily good? Perhaps. Is it the way that most people live and don’t realize? To some degree, I think it is.

How so? Certainly people ask,

“How was the drive?”

or

“How was your day?”

The answers, however usually involve a number.

“Oh man, the drive took forever.” Not necessarily a number, but certainly a time value.

“I had so many things to do.” Not a specific number, but a quantity of things.

I remember watching a youtube video somewhere from a some psychologist who said he loved making his patients do arithmetic of their life. He would ask how many hours someone would spend on gaming or on lounging then he would have them add that up per week, per month, per year. Their eyes would bug out. It’s sobering to put the numbers to our lives.

That’s why it should be intentional. For some, it’s trying to do more. For some, its slowing down and doing less. In either case, awareness and intentionality seem to be where people find their satisfaction and contentment….two of the least quantifiable yet paramount concepts in our lives.
